Clarke County Bird Cage Windsor Side Chair
Clarke County Bird Cage Windsor Side Chair

Called rod back chairs during the period, these chairs have been named Bird Cage chairs by modern day antique collectors. They are from the period 1800-1825. It was a time when Windsor chair making was becoming industrialized. The turnings were simplified and the seats were saddled less deeply than earlier chairs to make the work faster. We have read accounts of Philadelphia ship captains buying as many as 124 dozen of these chairs as venture cargo. The chairs would be loaded on ships and taken to Cuba to be traded for Rum and other goods. The design of these was very new and trendy. This was when box stretchers first replace H stretchers on Windsor Chairs. A good many of these chairs now had the back spindles bent, as our reproduction does. This makes for a very comfortable chair. Also for comfort, we designed this chair about 20% larger than an antique would have been.

Available in American Black Cherry only.

Furniture Finishes

About our stain colors: We make our own stains right here in our shop in Virginia. Mr. Case has designed 12 exclusive colors for our furniture. These special dye stains create colors that are much richer than those offered by the mainstream furniture industry. Unlike pigment stains that tend to mask the wood grain, our stains allow the grain to come alive in a variety of subtlety different shades. The down side to our stains is that they tend to be a little inconsistent. Things like the humidity and temperature on any given day can cause them to be lighter or darker. We can provide you with actual wood samples, however please be aware that the actual furniture will likely be different than the sample.

View larger samples of our finish selections by clicking on the small samples below. Please note that these colors are close approximations to the actual colors. Due to monitor variations and natural variations in the wood itself, the actual colors may vary from what you see here.
