Pair of Clarke County Step Down Windsor Arm Chairs
Pair of Clarke County Step Down Windsor Arm Chairs
Step down chairs were known in the period (1825-1850) as fancy chairs. The name step down was invented by 20th Century antique collectors based on the notched steps in the top of the back. Things were changing in chair design. The tops of these chairs were no longer rods, but a 3 inch wide part. This flat area gave the makers place to ad decorative painting of birds and flowers, which was the fad at the time. It was the end of an era as this would be the last Windsor chair design to evolve. Ours has bent back spindles, which makes it the most comfortable chair we offer. It is 20-30% larger than the originals which ads to the comfort. There are a lot of these chairs being reproduced today and not all of them are good. Some other things that set ours apart are the period correct details such as the steps in the back, box stretchers rather than H stretchers, through the seat wedged legs, and a nice splay to the legs and back posts.

Available in American Black Cherry or Maple. Sold only in pairs. Includes shipping to 48 states.

Furniture Finishes

About our stain colors: We make our own stains right here in our shop in Virginia. Mr. Case has designed 12 exclusive colors for our furniture. These special dye stains create colors that are much richer than those offered by the mainstream furniture industry. Unlike pigment stains that tend to mask the wood grain, our stains allow the grain to come alive in a variety of subtlety different shades. The down side to our stains is that they tend to be a little inconsistent. Things like the humidity and temperature on any given day can cause them to be lighter or darker. We can provide you with actual wood samples, however please be aware that the actual furniture will likely be different than the sample.

View larger samples of our finish selections by clicking on the small samples below. Please note that these colors are close approximations to the actual colors. Due to monitor variations and natural variations in the wood itself, the actual colors may vary from what you see here.
