The Museum Collection

Our most refined Windsor chairs. The seats are finely shaped and saddled. The turnings are bold and crisp with dramatic difference from thick to thin and just the right shape to the bulbous portions.  The splay of the legs and the angle of the arm posts are dramatic as well. Antique chairs with this level of design sophistication are very rare and usually found only in Museum collections. Oak bendings and spindles. Maple turnings. Seats available in your choice of Pine, Maple, Tiger Maple, or Cherry.  Pine is the most historically correct choice for the seat. Please be aware that Pine will have seasoning splits, knots, sap pockets and  specs.

Windsor Chairs

Made of 100% solid American hardwoods.  Our Windsor chairs are reproductions  and adaptations of American antiques from about 1765 through 1820.  They are made the same way they would have been made during the period. The bent parts are made of Oak which has long stringy fibers that tend to go the entire length of the part. This allows the parts to be made thinner for a more delicate and airy design while still remaining strong.  Maple is used in the legs for its strength its ability to retain crisp details when turned on a lathe.  The seats are made of softer wood that allows easy carving of the deeply saddled contours in the seat. The seats are almost 2’’ thick for strength yet have their front edges carved to a  fine line to appear thinner and more delicate than they really are.  The legs go all the way through the seats and are wedged in place. The spindles are done the same way where they go through the back. This is the result of tedious hand work, but makes the chairs incredibly strong as well as historically correct. The design and construction of this type of chair was at the cutting edge of human capability in the 18th century.  It demonstrates an understanding of how to work with wood rather than an attempt to conquer it. They also demonstrate  a sophisticated sense of design that is sadly lacking in today’s mainstream furniture industry.  We offer three series of Windsor chairs- The Museum Collection, The Southern Windsor Collection, and The Clarke County Collection.

The Southern Windsor Collection

Our most popular chairs. The Southern Windsor's are very authentic chairs. The bendings are Oak, the spindles and turnings are Maple and the seats are Poplar. Poplar was the wood of choice for chair seats in 18th century Virginia. The design of these chairs is typical of those found in better antique shops. The main clue that will give them away as reproductions is that antique chairs are almost never available in matching sets.

The Clarke County Windsor Collection

Many of our clients find these to be our most comfortable chairs. They are typically 20% larger than antique chairs would have been. The collection includes several models adapted from the later end of the Windsor era (1810-1830). These later chairs have bent spindles which make them especially comfortable. Made of 100% Cherry or 100% Maple.
